The new packaging line and its impact

For several months ago people of the Fixe Engineering Department were heard to say: “Our packaging produces too much plastic, and because of that we are generating tons and tons of plastic, so we don’t like those kinds of mountains. Merely the packaging for the ropes generated 34,000 plastic bags each year: A disturbing and serious figure. Making a change according these products entails that we now use only 2,700 plastic bags per year. Moreover, the project had also following goals:

• To reduce the amount of plastic (synthetic material).
• To work with new recycled, recyclable and biodegradable materials.
• The main consolidation of materials on each packaging so that it is easy to recycle.

In 2022, after applying these changes, we have managed to reduce the amount of plastic consumed in packaging from 2.7 tonnes to 1 tonne. The changes have been applied to two processes: Packing: Review of  the sizes of all boxes, also modifying the filling material of each box and working with a new tape. Packaging: The new packaging proposal has been extended to product references that represent a 85% of Fixe’s turnover. By doing so the impact is much greater. These products are:

• Ropes
• Quickdraw packs
• Via-Ferrata equipment
• Dyneema Rings
• Anchors

That is not, however, the end. We also continue working to reduce the high use of plastic in more products. Seeing that our main goal is to reduce this impact even further in 2022.
